For the question of numerical indicators, perhaps a marker that specifically means "More than I can count/estimate at a glance", usually used for things like large schools of small fish and plankton blooms etc?
My other thought was with Dialects, we have regions designated on fresh/salt water, what about depth? Are there different species of water folk at different depths? https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-5-layers-of-the-ocean.html
